Ethics in Business
By :Jeri Calle
(Smart Pros) The national media have recently begun to lament
the loss of ethics in today’s happiness world .According to a recent
survey cited in the Wall Street Journal, 79 percent of young Americans
believe that there are no absolute standards in ethics. Honesty in
business dealing doesn’t seem to be at forefront of people’s minds. §1
Most ethical lapses are so small as to seem insignificant
.However , they add up over time , and can snowball into a serious
situation. Poor ethical standards are most damaging in the long term .§2
The biggest victim of ethical lapse is trust .A small breach
of ethics is often known only between a few people .But this knowledge
can destroy trust fellows employees , and from there makes its easy up
the ladder , destroying trust between employees and supervisor , and
between division of companies .When ethical lapses become rampant ,
employee productivity declines , loyalty follows , soon major worst of
all the most important advantage a firm has, the trust between a firm
and its clients , erodes .§ 3
Why has such an important topic as business ethic gone unnoticed
, even actively ignored ?The biggest reasons is that ethics is largely
misunderstood .Ethical behaviour conducted without honest and integrity
, has recently become muddled up with moral or political questions .§4

Advertising , sociologist said , must destroy class barriers
for its social effect to make people dissatisfied with their standards
of living , to make them want more consumer goods and services , and
particularly to want those previously enjoyed by the socially-priviliged
minorities .The most avid readers of advertisements are the people who
are either moving up socially or who have bought something that they
feel gives them a new status .§1
Moreover , this class -destroying funcion of modern
advertising is cumulative .The initial effect is to encourage people to
want to buy consmer goods formrly enjoyed bu their social betters .As
they achieve this and and become socially mobile , advertising (and the
mass media ) then proceed to provide them with knowledge that enables
them to fill their new role –where to go for their holidays , which meal
to order , rhe right furniture to buy , the appropriate fuel toconsume
in their homes .§2
The conception of the purpose of advertising explains why
the situations shown on television are never typical though most
advertisements are aimed at the mass market .If a kitchen is shown , the
nit must be always large , beatifully clean and lavishly equipped with
expensive labour saving devices ;in the advertisements for petrol the
viewer never see scruffy ,second-hand cars owned owned by most motorists
–instead they see fast ,epensive cars or luxury family models .Whatever
situation they are in men and women are always attractive and well
groomed .Exotic , faraway places are regularly used as a background
.Accents are aalways classless.§3
In the long term , the function of adverising is not simply to
sell the equipment of everyday life ;it is to make people reach out for
a higher standard of living .Thus advertisements for central heating or
holidays in sun –drenched Tassil , for example , are not aimed solely
at the priviliged minority who might be able to afford these luxuries
.It is hoped that they will also encourage people to work harder and
save more for a holiday in Majorka .For a more convenient and
sophisticated form of heating than the old fashioned coal fire .As Lord
Thomson of Fleet put it in May 1966 « Advertisements is the great
leveller , the great promoter of social equality » §4
From Robert Miller ,The New Classes 1988
